Martyr Saint Serapian monk tied by rope line with a draped robe in red lighting with a dark background.
This striking tableau is based on the work of Spanish Baroque artist, Zurbaran. The original, executed in 1628, tells the story of the young martyr who was brutally tortured and martyred for his faith. Zurbaran, however, chose to depict a quieter and more intimate depiction where the gore and violence of the martyrdom are eliminated.
Following in his steps, we recreated a vision of the martyr where the light and saint’s expression convey a spiritual message, both visually and viscerally-allowing us a glimpse into a private world that would otherwise remain unknown to us.
