Martyrdom of Saint Matthew drawing inspiration once again from the great Baroque master, Caravaggio
Drawing inspiration once again from the great Baroque master, Caravaggio, our tableau focuses on the central and pivotal moment in the Martyrdom of St. Matthew. Our take on this theme highlights the drama, theatricality and spiritual agitation seconds before the execution. The complete composition is one of three in the cycle of St. Matthew, executed in 1599, in the church of San Luigi dei Francesi, in Rome. It was Caravaggio’s first public appearance and a monumental debut.
