Death of the Virgin in the background with a mourning Mary Magdalen on the foreground.
The original Death of the Virgin by Caravaggio (c. 1602) has been hailed as one of his greatest masterpieces, today at the Louvre in Paris, France. A controversial work in its time, as the artist supposedly used the dead, bloated corpse of a prostitute to depict the Virgin. Our take on the original focuses on Mary Magdalen who mourns in the foreground, while the body of the Virgin lies dead in the distance. The theatrical lighting and setting enhance a sense of mourning and immediacy in the scene.
